What to pack for Calgary, season by season
Calgary can swing thirty degrees in a day. Here is what we tell guests to bring for each season, and what we already have in the house.
Calgary sits at over a thousand metres, next to the Rockies, and gets more sunshine than any other big Canadian city. The weather is dry, bright, and changeable. The one rule for every season is layers.
Winter, November to March
Pack a real winter coat, gloves, a hat, and boots with grip. Cold snaps reach minus thirty, but chinook winds can push the same week above freezing. Sunglasses matter more than people expect, because snow and sun together are hard on the eyes. Both homes have heated interiors, spare blankets, and a shovel by the door.
Spring, April to May
Snow is still possible into May. Bring a warm layer, a waterproof shell, and shoes that can handle slush. The pathways around the Livingston ponds are lovely once they dry out.
Summer, June to August
Days are warm and evenings cool off fast. Pack shorts and a sweater, plus a hat and sunscreen. If you are heading to Banff or Kananaskis, bring proper walking shoes and a rain layer for the mountains. The Calgary Stampede runs for ten days in July, and the city fills up, so book early.
Fall, September to October
Our favourite season. Crisp mornings, golden larches in the mountains by late September, and quieter trails. A fleece, a light jacket, and jeans cover most days.
What we already have
You do not need to bring towels, bedding, dish soap, laundry detergent, coffee, or basic spices. Each unit has a hair dryer, an iron, and a first-aid kit. If you are staying a month or more and need something specific, ask before you arrive.
